Overview

Tile to metal re-roofing done properly

Concrete and terracotta tiles can last a long time, but as they age they become porous, crack and slip, and the mortar on the ridges breaks down. Rather than keep repairing an old tiled roof, many homeowners choose to replace it with metal.

A tile to metal conversion takes a lot of weight off the house, removes the ridges and mortar that cause many leaks, and gives you the chance to add sarking and insulation at the same time.

A tile to metal conversion includes

  • Removing and disposing of the old roof tiles
  • Checking the roof framing and battens, and adapting them for metal
  • Sarking and an insulation blanket where specified
  • New metal roof sheets, ridges, flashings and trims
  • New gutters, downpipes and valleys where needed
  • A full clean-up of the site

What to look for

Reasons people switch from tiles to metal

  • Ongoing leaks from cracked tiles, valleys or ridge capping
  • Tiles that are porous, crumbling or covered in moss
  • A wish to reduce the weight on the house structure
  • Less maintenance: no ridge re-pointing or broken tiles
  • A cleaner, modern look for a renovation

Our approach

How a conversion runs

  1. Inspect

We check the tiles, the roof framing, the pitch and the drainage, and take measurements.

  2. Specify and quote

We help you choose the profile and colour, and give you a written quote.

  3. Strip and prepare

The tiles are removed in sections and the battens adapted, keeping the house protected from the weather.

  4. Install and clean up

The new roof, flashings and gutters are installed and all old materials taken away.

Local knowledge

Tile roofs on the Northern Beaches & North Shore

Suburbs such as Dee Why, Narraweena, Cromer, Beacon Hill, Forestville and Frenchs Forest have many brick-and-tile homes from the 1960s and 1970s. Their tiled roofs are now reaching the age where leaks and slipped tiles become common, which makes them strong candidates for a metal re-roof.

Questions

Tile to Metal Re-roofing FAQs

More questions? See the Roofing services page or call us on 0416 069 926.

Can my house take a metal roof instead of tiles?

Usually, yes. Metal is much lighter than tiles, so the existing structure is normally suitable. Metal roofs do need battens at the right spacing, so we check and adapt the battens as part of the job.

Will a metal roof make my house hotter or noisier?

Not if it is installed with sarking and an insulation blanket. A lighter roof colour also reflects more heat.

What happens to the old tiles?

They are removed from the site as part of the job. If you want to keep some for another project, let us know before the work starts.
